Topamax

Topamax is a prescription drug manufactured by Johnson & Johnson that is used to prevent migraines. Because Topamax is an anti-convulsant it is also used to treat certain types of epileptic seizures in children and adults. Topiramate is the chemical name for Topamax and it works by preventing nerve cells from sending pain signals. In 1995, Topamax was approved for epileptic seizure treatments. In 2004, Topamax was approved for migraine treatment. Topiragen is the generic name of Topamax.

Topamax may cause harm to an unborn baby. In 2008, the results from a study from the American Academy of Neurology revealed that Topamax increases the risk of cleft lip and palate birth defects.

An increasing number of serious side-effects have been reported to the FDA which include the following:

• Sudden Loss of Vision
• Pain Around/Behind the Eyes
• Dry Mouth/Increased Thirst
• Increased Body Temperature
• Confusion
• Slowed Thinking/Memory Problems
• Speech and/or Balance Problems
• Severe Pain in Lower Back
• Painful or Difficult Urination
• Depression/Suicidal Thoughts

An increasing number of serious complications have been reported to the FDA regarding birth defects which include the following:

• Cleft Lip/Palate
• Facial/Limb Deformities
• Spina Bifida

The FDA has warned doctors to inform their female patients of child-bearing age as to the increased risks associated with the use of Topamax. If you are breast-feeding, pregnant or considering pregnancy while taking Topamax, you should discuss this with your doctor. Inform your doctor of any medications that you are taking in addition to Topamax including vitamins and natural supplements, and if you are on a low carbohydrate type diet. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any serious-side effects while taking Topamax.
