DePuy Hip Implants, manufactured by Johnson & Johnson (DePuy Orthopedics) were approved in 2005 to replace damaged hip sockets. The DePuy ASR Hip Replacement System contains metal-on-metal bearings which have been found to shed debris as they wear and may cause permanent tissue and muscle damage.
On August 25, 2010, Johnson & Johnson announced a recall of 93,000 DePuy Hip Replacement Systems due to a large number of consumer complaints concerning pain and swelling so severe that emergency medical attention was required including the need for a second hip replacement surgery. Some of the serious health conditions related to the DePuy ASR Hip Replacement System include:
- Metal Poisoning
- Implant Dislocation
- Severe Pain and Swelling
- Difficulty Walking
- Fracture of the Bone Surrounding the Implant System
- Loosening of the Implant System (within 2 years of the first implant surgery)
- Revision Surgery (Approximately 1 in 8 require a revision surgery within 5 years of the implant)
