The impact of a traumatic brain injury in pregnant women

On Behalf of | Nov 19, 2021 | Birth Injuries, Brain Injuries

Most women in Delaware do everything they can to take care of themselves and their unborn children during pregnancy. Unfortunately, pregnant women are not immune to the many dangers that pop up in life. Whether through a car accident, recreation or the negligent actions of another, a traumatic brain injury can ultimately affect a woman’s child.

TBIs affect brain development

Research shows that the brain development of a fetus can be negatively impacted by his or her mother’s TBI. This puts the child at risk for various neurological symptoms in the future. Both male and female babies are affected, but current research appears to show that males suffer more ill effects overall. Symptoms of a baby born to a woman with a TBI include:

  • Lower than average body weight at the time of weaning
  • Less anxiety than is age-appropriate
  • Dampened immune responses to infection and stress
  • Brains that are less organized

Doctors who attend to pregnant women should be sure to thoroughly assess their patients who are displaying TBI symptoms. Symptoms of a TBI often include headaches and dizziness, although these may occur soon after suffering an injury and resolve quickly. Cognitive issues and other neurological symptoms sometimes take time to appear and can persist for weeks, months or even years.

Anyone who has suffered a traumatic brain injury knows just how devastating the experience can be. Pregnant women face double the worry, as they must also consider the neurological health of their unborn children. Ongoing treatment for TBIs can be costly and emotionally draining too, which is why some victims in Delaware choose to file personal injury lawsuits against the negligent parties who caused their injuries.
