Common types of traumatic brain injuries

On Behalf of | Nov 30, 2021 | Brain Injuries

An impact to the head can result in damage that may affect someone for the rest of his or her life. Even minor head injuries can lead to trouble with cognition, motor skills and more. There are different types of traumatic brain injuries, and they may affect victims in different ways. A Delaware victim of a TBI may find it helpful to learn what to expect from their recovery and the potential long-term impacts they could face.

Recovering from different injuries

Head injuries are the result of some type of impact caused by a fall, car accident or other personal injury incidents. Because of the nature of these injuries, it can be difficult to determine the extent of the damage immediately after they occur. Two categories of brain injuries include:

  • Primary brain injury – This is a sudden and significant injury to the brain that is typically complete at the time of impact. These injuries often happen in a sudden event, such as a car crash.
  • Secondary brain injury – This is an injury that may evolve or change over a period of time after the primary brain injury. It can include changes to the chemicals, tissues or blood vessels in the brain.

Brain injuries affect each person differently based on unique factors that may include the victim’s age, health, location of the impact and more.

What to expect from recovery

After suffering a brain injury, it is in the interests of each Delaware victim to seek immediate medical help. A doctor can provide guidance on the possible effects of traumatic brain injuries and the type of care one may need going forward. Victims of TBIs who are suffering due to the reckless or negligent actions of someone else may have grounds to pursue recourse through a civil claim.
