Recovering after amputation caused by negligence of another

On Behalf of | Jul 29, 2020 | Personal Injury

Many accident victims in Delaware have to learn to live with life-changing, catastrophic injuries caused by the negligent or reckless acts of other parties. Reportedly, about 1.8 million people nationwide are living with amputations. Leg amputations, whether below or above the knee, are said to be the most common.

Recovering and adjusting to life without a limb is an extension of the trauma of the incident that caused the amputation. It starts with the recovery from anesthesia and learning how to change the wound dressings. Once discharged from the hospital, the amputee will have to change the bandages. The amputation wound must be closely monitored to prevent infections or other conditions that may hamper the healing process.

It is not uncommon for amputees to suffer phantom pain and grief after losing a limb. There will be extended periods of physical therapy and the process of adjusting to a prosthetic limb. While all this goes on, the amputee may be unable to return to the same occupation, and anxiety over lost wages and mounting medical bills could become overwhelming. Furthermore, the victim’s home may need adjustments to accommodate a wheelchair, and his or her vehicle will also require changes, all creating additional financial burdens.

It is at times like this that the advocacy of legal counsel is critical. A personal injury attorney with experience fighting for victims of amputation injuries can provide support and guidance throughout ensuing legal proceedings. The successful presentation of such a lawsuit could lead to a monetary judgment to cover documented financial and other losses.
