As the U.S. economy continues to grow, there is a greater need to ship goods and merchandise throughout the country. The most economical and efficient way to do this is with tractor-trailers. For Delaware motorists in passenger vehicles, it can definitely be intimidating to share the road with these massive trucks. Because they are so big, car accidents involving tractor-trailers have a much higher chance of being fatal.

Recently, a tragic crash in Newark claimed the life of one man and injured several others, including a child. The accident happened during the late afternoon hours along the southbound lanes of Interstate 95. According to reports, traffic had slowed to a halt and the driver of a tractor-trailer failed to stop. The tractor-trailer rear-ended a sedan and forced it across all the southbound lanes, reports said.

Reportedly, the tractor-trailer continued on and collided with two other cars, forcing them off the roadway and down an embankment. The big rig then overturned, coming to rest partially in the median and partially in the left lane of the highway. Tragically, the driver of the first car was killed in the crash, authorities said. According to police, occupants in the other cars were also injured, including a child who was rushed to a hospital in critical condition. The accident shut down the southbound lanes of I-95 for nearly eight hours, reports said.

Large commercial trucks present a unique danger to those in smaller passenger vehicles. Although truck drivers are required to undergo hours of training and obtain special licenses, they can still make mistakes. Families in Delaware who have suffered loss due to negligence in car accidents can take action by contacting a legal representative and filing a claim.
