Car accidents involving drunk drivers injure thousands every year

On Behalf of | Oct 2, 2018 | Car Accidents

Despite stringent traffic laws and increased public awareness campaigns, driving while under the influence of alcohol continues to be a big problem on roadways in Delaware and across the country. Statistics indicate that almost 29 people are killed every day in the United States due to car accidents with drunk drivers. Recently, a Millsboro man was hit with serious charges after a crash that injured two people.

The accident occurred during the overnight hours on Millsboro Highway. According to reports, the driver of an eastbound BMW crossed the center line of the highway and drove into the westbound lane. Reports say the BMW collided head-on with a Nissan Altima.

Unfortunately, the driver and passenger in the Altima were seriously injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment, authorities said. Police said they noticed an odor of alcohol after contacting the driver of the BMW, so they conducted a DUI investigation. Reportedly, the driver of the BMW was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and two counts of vehicular assault, among other charges.

It is common knowledge that getting behind the wheel while intoxicated is one of the most dangerous things a person can do. Alcohol reduces reaction time and significantly impairs the motor skills necessary to safely operate a motor vehicle. Tragically, car accidents involving intoxicated drivers kill and injure thousands of people every year in the United States. Those in Delaware who have suffered injuries or the loss of a loved one in an accident such as this could benefit from discussions with an experienced attorney. Damages from a successful lawsuit could bring much-needed financial relief to struggling families.
