Surgical errors: Woman awarded over $2 million in lawsuit

On Behalf of | Sep 6, 2018 | Surgical Errors

Fortunately, updated safety measures and technological advancements have made surgeries and other medical procedures safer than ever before. However, there is always a certain amount of risk involved with any surgical procedure. Although Delaware is home to some of the best surgeons and physicians in the world, these medical professionals can still make mistakes. When surgical errors are made, the patient suffers the consequences.

Recently, a woman in another state was awarded over $2 million from a lawsuit she filed against a doctor for injuries she allegedly suffered during surgery. According to the lawsuit, the woman’s uterus ruptured as she was giving birth. After the baby was successfully delivered, it was alleged that the defendant performed multiple surgeries within a few hours in an attempt to stop the bleeding that was occurring, including an abdominal hysterectomy.

The plaintiff claimed that another surgery had to be performed by a different doctor the same day to repair damage to her bladder and other organs that occurred during her previous surgeries. The defendant was accused of negligence that caused the plaintiff to suffer permanent pain and injuries. Reportedly, the jury sided with the plaintiff and awarded her $2.4 million.

Patient safety is the top priority for the vast majority of medical professionals in Delaware and across the United States. Unfortunately, the chance for errors will always be present anytime humans are involved. Those in Delaware who have suffered injuries as a result of surgical errors can take legal action and file a claim. A successful lawsuit could result in financial relief to help with medical expenses and other monetary losses.
