Car accidents: Recent study shows deaths continue to increase

On Behalf of | Jan 19, 2020 | Car Accidents

They say getting there is half the fun, but traveling these days can be treacherous. Despite stringent traffic laws and increased safety measures, roadways across the state of Delaware are becoming more dangerous every year. According to a recent study, deaths related to car accidents increased last year in Delaware.

The study, conducted by the Office of Highway Safety, showed the number of traffic fatalities rose 12 percent in 2019 compared to the year before. The study showed there were 132 traffic-related deaths in 2019. This was an increase from 117 deaths in 2018 and 110 deaths in 2017.

Reportedly, Delaware continues to have one of the highest rates of pedestrian deaths in the United States. The study from the highway safety office showed the number of pedestrian deaths rose by six in 2019 compared to the previous year. Also, motorcycle fatalities increased by two. This disturbing trend is not specific to Delaware, as the number of traffic fatalities have increased nationwide. Many attribute this increase to greater numbers of distracted drivers.

It seems that roadways in Delaware are crowded and congested nearly 24 hours a day. Unfortunately, today’s motorists are also forced to contend with more distracted and impaired drivers, which only makes accidents more likely. In Delaware, those who suffer injuries or loss due to negligence in car accidents have the right to pursue damages by consulting a legal representative and filing a claim. Damages from a successfully litigated lawsuit could help victims and families recover from any financial hardships that occurred as a result of an accident.
