Car accidents involving bicycles are on the rise in Delaware

In the state of Delaware, cycling has become a popular form of recreation and transportation. Traveling by bicycle is environmentally friendly, very economical and a great way to stay in shape. However, as roadways across the state become more crowded, traveling by bicycle can also be very dangerous. Since cyclists are minimally protected, car accidents involving bicycles have a greater chance of being serious or fatal.

A recent crash in Lewes involving a bicycle left a man critically injured. The accident happened during the afternoon hours along Coastal Highway. According to reports, the driver of a northbound sedan attempted to change lanes to make a right turn and struck a cyclist who was headed the same direction. Reports said the cyclist collided with the right side of the sedan and was thrown from his bike.

Reportedly, the cyclist was riding in a lane designated for bicycles at the time of the accident. The cyclist was badly injured and rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, authorities said. The driver of the sedan was not injured in the accident. Police say investigations are still ongoing.

These days, drivers are constantly bombarded with distractions that can take focus off of the road. Statistics say distracted drivers are a main cause of car accidents involving bicycles. Delaware families who have suffered injuries or the loss of a loved one due to negligence in an accident could benefit from discussions with an experienced attorney. A successfully litigated claim could result in vital compensation to help victims and families recover from a tragic accident.
