Surgical errors: No procedure is totally risk free

On Behalf of | May 1, 2019 | Surgical Errors

The words “routine surgery” get thrown around a lot. Truth be told, no surgical procedure is routine. There is risk involved anytime a patient undergoes surgery. Every year, hundreds of patients in Delaware and across the nation are injured or killed as a result of surgical errors. When errors or negligence during surgery result in injury or death, victims or surviving family members can pursue legal action against the at-fault party or parties.

In another state, a couple filed a lawsuit after the husband suffered painful injuries due to alleged errors during a procedure. According to the lawsuit, the man visited an emergency room with shoulder pain. Tests later confirmed that the man had a fracture in his shoulder, and he was told by his doctor to keep the arm in a sling and it would heal, the lawsuit said.

Allegedly, the man’s condition did not improve so he underwent a surgical procedure to implant a plate and a screw in his shoulder. The plaintiffs allege that the man’s shoulder only worsened, and the man was forced to undergo a total shoulder replacement surgery performed by a different surgeon. They claim that the first surgery was not performed appropriately, and the man now suffers constant pain and needs treatment as a result.

It doesn’t matter how advanced technology is or how well a surgeon is trained, no surgical procedure is free of risk. Those in Delaware who have suffered injuries or loss as a result of surgical errors could benefit by seeking the services of an attorney. Damages from a successful claim could provide victims and families with much-needed financial relief.
