How to tell if you are a distracted driver

On Behalf of | Feb 27, 2018 | Car Accidents

Delaware police will crack down on distracted drivers in the near future. Law enforcement will begin the “Don’t Be the You Hate” campaign, which aims to enforce the notion that distracted driving is incredibly dangerous. A first offense for driving while using a mobile device can result in a fine up to $100.

While many people would agree distracted driving is a problem responsible for numerous car accidents every year, people do not like to turn the lens on themselves. All of the following actions constitute distracted driving, and if you do them regularly, then you need to take steps to stop.

You keep the phone in the passenger’s seat

Your phone should either be in your pocket or in a car holder to give you directions. If you keep your phone in the passenger’s seat, then you probably do so to respond to any texts or phone calls that come up. Leave the phone alone until you reach your destination.

You use a hands-free device

Using a hands-free device can be just as dangerous as talking directly on a phone. Your hands may be on the wheel, but your mind is elsewhere. Your eyes and your mind should be on the road, and anything that takes either of those away is a danger.

You like to eat while driving

Many people think driving is the perfect time to multitask. Some people eat meals or do their makeup while driving. Avoid this at all costs. If you must, then wake up earlier in the morning, so you do not feel as rushed. Give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination.

You adjust your GPS

It is great to use your GPS to get around, but once you have directions, leave the phone alone. You do not want to keep messing with the screen by taking your hands off the wheel.
