Spinal cord injuries from car accidents are frightening

On Behalf of | Dec 27, 2016 | Car Accidents

In the aftermath of a car crash, some Delaware residents realize that something is wrong with their backs. Upon receiving medical care, they are told that they suffered a spinal cord injury and their futures could be unclear, which is frightening. While they wait to discover their fates, they might be able to seek restitution from the drivers responsible for the car accidents that put them in this position.

One of the deciding factors in how well a victim of a spinal cord injury will recover is whether the injury is considered “complete” or “incomplete.” An injury is considered complete if the sufferer lost most of his or her ability to control motor function (movement) and sensation below where the injury took place. In an incomplete spinal cord injury, the sufferer retains some degree of feeling and motor function. The severity of an incomplete injury can vary widely.

Immediate treatment is crucial in recovery, especially in an incomplete spinal cord injury. The problem with back injuries is that their severity might not be immediately recognizable to the victim. Any feelings of pain, lack of sensation or movement or difficulties with bowel/bladder control or breathing require prompt medical attention. Other symptoms such as numbness or tingling in the extremities, weakness in any body part or trouble walking or maintaining balance can also signal a spinal cord injury.

Some Delaware residents might be fortunate enough to fully recover from a spinal cord injury, but many are left with some degree of disability for the rest of their lives. When these injuries are suffered in car accidents believed to have been caused by the negligence of another party, a personal injury claim could provide sufferers with the financial resources needed for recovery and long-term care, along with other damages brought on by the fact that their lives will never be the same. These victims should not hesitate to discuss their situations with an attorney who can help provide them with the best chance possible of receiving the restitution to which they might be entitled.
