Yasmin or Yaz Birth Control

Yasmin or Yaz is a fourth generation birth control pill marketed by Bayer to not only prevent pregnancy but to also clear acne and treat/prevent symptoms associated with PMDD (premenstrual dysphonic disorder). Yaz was first introduced in 2001, and marketed as a safer form of birth control containing the synthetic hormone, Drospirenone and estrogen. In 2008, Yaz became the best-selling oral contraceptive in the United States.

Studies conducted on oral contraceptives containing Drospirenone found that women were at a greater risk of developing significant and harmful health risks.* Yaz has been linked to:

  • Blood Clots
  • Strokes
  • Heart Attack
  • Gallbladder Disease
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis
  • Pulmonary Embolism
  • Liver Cancer, Tumors
  • Severe Liver Bleeding
  • Breast Cancer
  • Cerebral Hemorrhage
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Total Loss of Vision
  • IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)

*(Increased side effects can result from several risk factors such as smoking, high cholesterol, and women over the age of 35).

If you are currently taking birth control that contains Drospirenone and are concerned about the health risks associated with Drospirenone, you should talk to your doctor about switching to another birth control. Talk to your doctor immediately if you develop any of the following symptoms: constant leg pain, sudden shortness of breath, severe chest pain or pain in the upper right abdomen, as they could be associated with a more serious condition. If you currently smoke and are over the age of 35, you should talk to your doctor about the risks associated with combination oral contraceptives.
