Surgical errors: Widow awarded over $1.5 million in lawsuit

Fortunately, residents of Delaware have access to some of the best medical care in the world. Every single day, thousands of patients across the state undergo surgical procedures. There is risk involved with every surgery, and for a procedure to be successful, every caregiver involved must perform his or her job to the best of their abilities. However, many medical professionals today are overworked, and this can contribute to surgical errors. In another state, a lawsuit alleged that negligence by a nurse contributed to the death of a patient.

According to the lawsuit, the patient visited an emergency room seeking treatment after he became dizzy and disoriented. The lawsuit said that doctors found that the man had collection of blood on the left side of his brain. Allegedly, the man underwent surgery to repair the bleed and was placed in a hospital room for several days to recover. As the man was recovering, the lawsuit claimed his nurse attempted to insert a feeding tube to provide the man with nutrition.

The man's wife alleged that his nurse struggled to insert the tube, and when the wife questioned the nurse, the nurse said he knew what he was doing. The lawsuit said it was discovered that the nurse inserted the feeding tube into the man's lung, causing the man's lungs to collapse. His wife alleged this error led to the man's death. She was awarded over $1.5 million in the lawsuit.

The majority of surgical procedures across the country are successful. However, one mistake, no matter how minor, can permanently injure or kill a patient. Delaware families who have suffered the loss of loved ones due to surgical errors could benefit from discussions with an experienced attorney. A successful claim could result in much-needed financial relief.
