Birth injuries: Alleged negligent care leads to death of twin

Because of stringent regulations and amazing advancements in medical technology, many people think that childbirth is a fairly routine and safe process. Unfortunately, this couldn't be further from the truth. Birth injuries continue to happen at a high rate in Delaware and across the nation. The birth of a child should be a time for joy and celebration, but it turned into a tragic and traumatic event for a mother in another state.

The mother filed a lawsuit after alleged negligent care during her pregnancy led to the death of one of her twin babies. According to the lawsuit, the woman was pregnant with twins. When she was 26 weeks pregnant, the woman said she was told that her twins were dichorionic diamniotic in breech position, which meant that the twins had separate amniotic sacs.

When she was 33 weeks pregnant, according to the the lawsuit, the mother visited the hospital after she experienced a spontaneous rupture of membranes. Allegedly, she was transferred to another hospital but sent home and told to follow up with her doctor. A few days later, the woman had to undergo an emergency cesarean section and one of her twins was delivered stillborn, according to allegations. She seeks to hold her doctor responsible over claims that he failed to properly monitor and treat her pregnancy.

During childbirth, any deviation from the accepted standard of care can lead to fatal injuries to both mothers and infants. When negligence results in birth injuries, affected families in Delaware may have grounds to purse legal recourse. A successful lawsuit could result in compensation and a sense of justice.
