Car accidents: DUI checkpoints set up to stop drunk driving

It's common knowledge that driving under the influence of alcohol is one of the most dangerous things a person can do, yet drivers in Delaware continue to get behind the wheel while intoxicated. On average, one person is killed by an drunk driver every 40 minutes in the United States. Tragically, car accidents involving drunk drivers have a higher chance of being very serious or fatal. To combat the problem of drunk driving, police forces across the state of Delaware routinely set up DUI checkpoints.

During a recent weekend, law enforcement agencies set up DUI checkpoints in every Delaware county. The DUI checkpoints were a coordinated effort by the Office of Highway Safety and Delaware State Police along with local police departments. According to reports, over 2,500 vehicles passed through the checkpoints.

Police said three drivers were arrested for drunk driving and nine drivers were arrested on drug charges. Also, 38 people were cited for various traffic violations. Reportedly, the Office of Highway Safety will continue DUI patrols through the holidays in an effort to reduce drunk driving. According to records, there have been 24 confirmed DUI fatal crashes in Delaware this year and over 4,000 DUI arrests.

Roadways across the state are becoming crowded and dangerous. When drivers get behind the wheel while intoxicated, car accidents become inevitable. Anyone in Delaware who suffers injury or the loss of a loved one due to negligence in a crash has the right to pursue legal action. A successfully litigated lawsuit could end in substantial compensation to ease the pain and suffering of victims and/or their families, along with other documented financial losses.
