Brain injuries: Surfer starts a foundation to help those in need

When a person bumps his or her head, he or she may think it's no big deal. However, even minor head trauma can be enough to result in debilitating injuries to one of the body's most delicate organs. In Delaware and across the country, many who suffer brain injuries often don't recognize the symptoms. One man who recovered from a traumatic brain injury now seeks to help others do the same.

The man said he was surfing when a huge wave spun him upside down, causing his head to slam into the ocean floor. He said he remembers being a bit sore but he drove home thinking that his injury wasn't very serious. A couple of weeks later, the man said the vision in his left eye began to blur, and he started to slur his words.

A couple of weeks after that, the vision in his right eye became blurry, and he began experiencing headaches. The man visited a hospital and learned he had suffered a traumatic brain injury, which required intense therapy. He sought out alternative treatments and found that hyperbaric therapy greatly eased his pain and helped him heal.

However, the new treatments were very expensive and not covered by his insurance. The man wanted to help others who have suffered brain injuries to get the treatment they need, so he started the Strength In Pain Foundation. The nonprofit organization provides financial assistance to those who are struggling with the costs of treatments for brain injuries.

Without question, a brain injury is a difficult thing to experience. But, when the injury happens due to the negligence of another party, the trauma is greatly magnified. Those in Delaware who have suffered brain injuries due to negligence may want to consider seeking the services of a knowledgeable attorney. A successful claim could result in substantial financial relief to help victims receive the treatments they need.
