Surgical errors can have disastrous consequences for patients

Although surgical procedures these days are technically safer and more efficient, there will still be risks of mistakes any time humans are involved. Unfortunately, when mistakes are made, the patient suffers the consequences. Every year, surgical errors affect thousands of people in Delaware and across the country. A woman in another state filed a lawsuit alleging that a foreign object was left in her body for nearly 15 years following a surgery.

According to the lawsuit, the woman was suffering from incontinence and needed surgical intervention. The lawsuit said she underwent a bladder suspension surgery in 2001 to address her issues. During the procedure, the surgeon inserted titanium anchors into the plaintiff's pelvic bone using an anchor driver. After the surgery, the plaintiff claimed that she was experiencing unusual pain in her pelvic region. Upon notifying her surgeon, the lawsuit said the woman was told that there was nothing wrong.

She alleged that she continued to experience pain and returned to the surgeon twice in 2004, once in 2009 and again in 2012. However, she alleged that her doctors claimed to find no reason for her pain. The plaintiff said she again returned in 2015 and was notified that she may have a foreign body in her pelvis and underwent surgery to remove it. Allegedly, the object turned out to be an anchor driver that was used to place anchors for her initial bladder surgery back in 2001.

During a surgery, providers must follow safety requirements and perform their duties with precision. Failure to uphold this standard of care can have disastrous and lifelong ramifications for patient. Victims and families in Delaware who have been affected surgical errors may want to consider seeking the services of a legal representative and filing a claim.
