Delaware’s Injury And Medical Malpractice Leaders

New treatment for brain injuries shows promise

The brain is one of the most important organs in the human body. It's also arguably the most fragile. An injury to the brain can be debilitating and affect a person for the rest of his or her life. Every year, nearly two and a half million people in Delaware and across the United States suffer brain injuries. According to a recent study, a new inexpensive treatment could help prevent brain injury deaths.

In the study, researchers used a drug known as tranexamic acid (TXA). Apparently, when used in traumatic brain injury patients, TXA stops bleeding into the brain by preventing blood clots from being broken down. The study was conducted in 175 hospitals across 29 countries. Nearly 12,000 patients either received TXA intravenously or an inactive placebo.

Investigators found that the risk of death was reduced in patients who were treated with TXA within three hours of a brain injury. According to the results, there was a 20% reduction in deaths for patients with a mild or moderate brain injury. Researchers said that TXA can help to prevent brain bleeding from worsening, but it can't repair damage that has already been done, so early treatment is crucial.

A brain injury can have devastating impacts on a person no matter how minor the injury may seem. In Delaware, when the negligence of another party results in brain injuries, victims and families have options available to help them through this difficult experience. By consulting an attorney and filing a claim, victims and families can obtain much-needed compensation to offset medical expenses and other financial damages.
