Lawsuit alleges father's death was caused by surgical errors

These days, thanks to technology and safety regulations, surgery is relatively safe. The state of Delaware is home to skilled and experienced physicians who combine their knowledge with advanced medical technology to produce better patient outcomes. However, no surgery is totally without risk, especially when humans are involved. A man in another state filed a lawsuit after surgical errors allegedly killed his father.

Reportedly, his father was in the middle of a spinal surgery when complications occurred. According to the lawsuit, the man was given four injections of a sedative known as propofol. Allegedly, he received a total of 20 cubic centimeters of the drug within a time frame of 11 minutes. The lawsuit asserted this led to the man suffering an overdose.

The man became unstable, but despite this, the surgeon reportedly left him with a nurse to go see another patient. The man began struggling to breath and his pulse dropped, but emergency medical personnel were not called until 10 minutes later, the plaintiff claimed. According to allegations, CPR was not started until after emergency responders arrived. Unfortunately, the man passed away.

The plaintiff accuses the defendants of negligence and claims his father would not have died had he been properly evaluated and treated. He seeks $7 million in damages. Any mistake during a surgical procedure, no matter how minor, can cost a patient his or her life. Families in Delaware who have lost a loved one due to surgical errors may want to consider discussing the matter with a legal representative. Damages from a successful claim could help with end-of-life expenses and other monetary losses.
