Family to receive $3 million after surgical errors led to death

Most doctors in Delaware will not recommend surgery to patients unless it is absolutely necessary. Although surgical procedures are much safer these days, surgery is still risky. A lawsuit filed in another state claims that a surgeon performed unnecessary surgery on a woman, and she eventually died due to surgical errors.

According to the lawsuit, the woman was told by the surgeon that she most likely had a cancerous mass on her adrenal gland and needed surgery to remove the gland. The lawsuit said the woman went through with the procedure and her adrenal gland and kidney were removed. Allegedly, there were mistakes made during the surgery and the woman lost nearly 80 percent of her blood. Her massive blood loss caused the woman to suffer a lung disorder and she couldn't be properly ventilated, according to claims.

The woman eventually died. Her family asserted that the woman was healthy and did not have cancer. They believe her doctor rushed to judgment and made her think she was sick and needed surgery. The plaintiffs claim her death was caused by the surgery and negligent care. The lawsuit is currently in the process of being settled with the family receiving $3 million.

Any mistake during a surgery, no matter how minor, could have deadly consequences for patients. Families in Delaware who have suffered the loss of a loved one as a result of surgical errors may want to consider discussing the matter with a knowledgeable and experienced attorney. A successfully litigated claim could result in a substantial monetary award to help families recover from this tragedy.
