Woman awarded $56 million after surgical errors caused paralysis

Thanks to technological advancements, surgeries these days are much safer. However, it doesn't matter how safe a surgical procedure is perceived to be; there is always risk involved. Many Delaware residents may not know that surgical errors are still quite common. In another state, a botched surgery left a woman paralyzed, and she filed a lawsuit.

According to the lawsuit, the woman was experiencing pain and tingling in her arms and neck so she underwent a surgical procedure called a laminectomy to relieve her pain. Allegedly, a fractured bone became embedded in the covering of her spinal cord during the procedure. The lawsuit claimed that the injury was detected, but doctors still proceeded with the surgery. The lawsuit alleged that doctors knew the woman's spinal cord was damaged, but they didn't tell anybody.

The day following the procedure, the plaintiff's blood pressure dropped and she was paralyzed, the lawsuit said. Allegedly, testing read by an outside radiologist showed the woman had a collection of blood pressing on her spinal cord. However, neurosurgeons told the woman she had suffered a stroke. The plaintiffs claimed that if there had been a proper diagnosis, the blood could have been removed, relieving the woman's paralysis. A jury sided with the plaintiff and awarded her nearly $56 million.

Unfortunately, any type of mistake or neglect during a procedure will directly affect the patient, possibly causing injuries and even death. Those in Delaware who have suffered injuries due to surgical errors may be able to take legal action. A successful lawsuit could provide victims and families with much-needed compensation.
