Delaware’s Injury And Medical Malpractice Leaders

Sadly, birth injuries continue to rise in the United States

The United States is largely considered to be the greatest country in the world, so one would think that United States citizens would also have access to the best medical care in the world. Unfortunately, this is not the case, especially for expectant mothers and newborns. According to a recent study, birth injuries and infant mortality rates are on the rise in Delaware and across the country.

The shocking study, conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said that eight out of every 100 newborns in the United States are injured during birth. Birth injuries have risen by about 75 percent since 2000, according to the study. Reportedly, the mortality rate for newborns in the United States has been trending up for a few decades.

Generally, birth injuries fall into two main categories: mechanical and anoxic. Too much force on an infant's body during delivery, from the use of forceps, vacuum extraction or other delivery techniques, can result in a mechanical injury. An anoxic injury occurs when an infant is deprived of oxygen. Needless to say, both types of injuries can have lifelong drastic consequences.

In hospitals across the country, doctors and other medical staff know the proper labor and delivery procedures. However, they sometimes fail to take precautionary measures or fail carry out certain steps. As a result, over 50,000 mothers and/or newborns suffer birth injuries every year in the United States. Out of all the developed countries, America is one of the most unsafe places to have a baby. Parents in Delaware who have been affected by birth injuries can take action by consulting an experienced attorney.
