New guardrail on Delaware Route 1 may help prevent car accidents

Roadways in Delaware are becoming overcrowded and very hazardous. Many roadways across the state were built decades ago and were not designed to handle the high traffic volumes that have become the norm these days. In recent years, officials and police departments have taken many steps in an attempt to reduce car accidents and make busy highways safer for all motorists. For example, a cable guardrail is being installed along a portion of Delaware Route 1 where a tragic accident claimed the lives of five family members.

The devastating crash happened when a southbound pickup truck crossed through the median of Delaware Route 1 into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with the family's minivan, reports said. The crash claimed the lives of a father and his four young daughters; only the mother survived the crash, according to authorities. Reportedly, the driver of the pickup truck is facing homicide charges.

Officials say a barrier along the median of the highway may have prevented the crash and could prevent future accidents from occurring. Thankfully, work has now started on the project, which will install a high-tension cable barrier in the median along an 11.5 mile stretch of Delaware Route 1. Reportedly, the project will cost a total of $8.5 million. According to studies, cable guardrails are more cost-efficient and absorb the force of a collision better than metal or concrete barriers.

Although new safety measures are being implemented, roadways across Delaware are still very dangerous. When negligence in car accidents causes injury or the loss of loved ones, victims and family members can pursue legal action. A successful lawsuit could result in substantial compensation to help recover any monetary losses that occurred.
