New study may help to reduce surgical errors

When compared to years past, surgical procedures these days are much safer. Technology, safety improvements and tighter regulations are just a few reasons why surgery is safer and more efficient now than even just 20 years ago. However, modern technological advancements may have given the general population a false sense of security. Surgical errors still occur at an alarming rate in Delaware and across the United States. According to a new study, the stress of modern day operating rooms could be leading to more mistakes by surgeons.

Findings from research conducted by a prominent university show that surgeons make up to 66 percent more mistakes in the operating room during stressful moments. Reportedly, the study used technology that captured the heart rate and other electrical activity of a surgeon's heart. Researchers also collected video in operating rooms and documented mistakes.

When mistakes were made, the stress levels and surgery errors were time stamped and the data revealed the alarming trend. According to reports, medical mistakes cause anywhere from 250,000 to 440,000 deaths every year in the United States. Researchers are hoping that the results of the study could be used to develop protocols to reduce stress on surgeons during operations, thus improving outcomes.

Most surgeons in Delaware are highly skilled and well-trained, but this does not make them exempt from mistakes. When humans are involved, errors will occur. Families who have suffered loss due to surgical errors could benefit from discussions with a knowledgeable attorney. A successful claim could result in compensation to help victims and families recover documented monetary losses.
