Delaware’s Injury And Medical Malpractice Leaders

Woman suffers permanent brain injuries in routine procedure

With stringent patient safety regulations and modern technological advancements, medical care in Delaware and across the United States should be safer than ever before. However, statistics show that negligence during medical procedures continues to be one of the leading causes of death and injury in the country. When health care providers fail to handle even the most routine procedures with care, the consequences can be traumatic for the patient. A couple in another state was awarded almost $4 million after alleged negligence caused a woman to suffer permanent brain injuries.

The lawsuit, filed by the couple against a medical facility, claimed that the wife allegedly experienced negligent care during the removal of a catheter. According to the lawsuit, the woman sought treatment at the facility for a septic infection. Just before discharge, the plaintiffs claimed that a nurse removed a central venous catheter from the woman while she was sitting in a wheelchair upright.

Allegedly, the woman experienced breathing difficulties and was transferred to the intensive care unit. Not long after, it was discovered that the woman had suffered a stroke as a result of an air embolism that had occurred when her catheter was removed, the lawsuit claimed. According to the plaintiffs, the woman suffered permanent paralysis on her left side and now requires around-the-clock care. A jury sided with the plaintiffs and returned a verdict for the couple of $3.85 million.

Although medical care in the United States has improved by leaps and bounds, mistakes and negligence will still happen. Families of those in Delaware who suffer brain injuries or any other injury as the result of negligent care could benefit from discussions with an experienced attorney. Damages from a successfully litigated lawsuit could provide monetary relief to help victims and families during this difficult time.
