Don't drive distracted in a parking lot

A lot more can happen in a parking lot than just a bent bumper. On average, over 60,000 injuries occur in parking garages and lots across the country annually.

A common explanation for why parking lot accidents occur is that someone drove while distracted. Driving at a relatively low speed combined with the fact that most other vehicles are in park lulls drivers into false states of security. However, the last thing you want to do is drive distracted anywhere even in a parking lot.

Avoid your phone

Many people have the habit of checking their phones once they are back inside their cars. They do not see the harm in responding to a text while backing out. However, you need to keep both eyes on your surroundings even if you are only going 5 mph. It is best to take care of anything you need to do on your phone before starting your car's engine. Additionally, you should input your destination into your GPS before taking off, too.

Do not rely too much on technology

Many cars come equipped with cameras and other safety features to decrease the chances of a crash. However, too many people rely too much on these devices. While your car may automatically stop when another vehicle approaches, someone else may not have the same feature. Continue to look over your shoulder when backing out even if your car has a camera.

Remain alert

Above all else, you need to remain aware of your surroundings at all times. Even in a parking lot, you need to obey stop signs and stay within your lane of traffic. You also want to anticipate the actions of other drivers. If you see someone beginning to back out, then stop for them instead of trying to drive past. Another tip is to park away from the main entrance so that you are not near as many other vehicles.
