Although Delaware residents can adhere to all traffic laws and drive responsibly, they still may become a victim in a collision. Unfortunately, car accidents can occur as a result of negligence and recklessness of another person. Recently, a fatal accident occurred that may have involved someone driving under the influence of drugs.
A 61-year-old driver, accompanied by her 74-year-old male passenger, was attempting to make a left turn in an intersection when her vehicle was struck by another one. Reportedly, both occupants were wearing their seat belts, and the woman had the right of way to turn. Allegedly, the other driver was speeding and also drove on the shoulder to run the red light just prior to the accident. Because he entered the intersection as the woman was turning left, he struck the passenger side of her vehicle. The intersection of the accident was closed approximately three hours as the accident was investigated and cleaned up.
The older man did not survive his injuries. The female victim was also seriously injured and reportedly remains in critical condition at a medical facility. The apparently at-fault driver suffered only minor injuries. Authorities suspect that driver may have been driving under the influence of drugs and anticipate filing formal charges against him that may consist of vehicular homicide, assault and driving under the influence.
Car accidents can change lives for all parties involved. It can be complicated and overwhelming to navigate the process of handling property damage, insurance companies, medical expenses and burial expenses for deceased victims. Fortunately, Delaware personal injury attorneys can help victims understand their legal options. Attorneys can guide victims through insurance claims and help them seek compensation in civil court when appropriate.
